Pew Charitable Trusts Grants

DESCRIPTION: The Pew Charitable Trusts support the work of nonprofit organizations in the fields of culture, education, marine conservation worldwide, health and human services, public policy, and religion. The trusts seek to encourage individual development and personal achievement, cross-disciplinary problem solving, and innovative approaches to meeting the changing needs of a global community. Support is given to projects designed to meet identified goals in an efficient, creative, and realistic manner. Grants have recently been awarded for health professional education; college and university science programs, economics, hospital care research, civic education, international nutrition policy, liberal arts, nursing, area studies, language, faculty and curricular development; public school reform and restructuring; and programs to enhance the physical, social, and educational development of disadvantaged children. Proposals are accepted all year, and grants are assigned from a particular trust at the discretion of the committee on grants. Grants are awarded four times a year--in March, June, September, and December.

REQUIREMENTS: Grants are made only to tax-exempt organizations that are not classified as private foundations under Section 509(a) by the IRS. Grants are not made to individuals or for endowments.

EPA Environmental Education Grants

DESCRIPTION: The grants support projects to design, demonstrate, or disseminate practices, methods, or techniques related to environmental education and training. Grant funds shall be used to establish an education and training program that will include, at a minimum, design, demonstration, or dissemination of environmental curricula, including development of educational tools and materials; design and demonstration of field methods, practices, and techniques, including assessment of environmental and ecological conditions and analysis of environmental and pollution problems; projects to understand and assess a specific environmental issue or a specific environmental problem; provision of training or related education for teachers, faculty, or related personnel in a specific geographic area or region; and design and demonstration of projects to foster international cooperation in addressing environmental issues and problems involving the United States, Canada, or Mexico.

REQUIREMENTS: Local education agencies, colleges or universities, nonprofit organizations, and noncommercial educational broadcasting entities are eligible.

NOGI Awards

DESCRIPTION: The NOGI (New Orleans Grand Isle) awards are given each year in four categories: Arts, Science, Sports/Education, and Distinguished Service. Previous recipients of the award select the winners from nominations received from members and previous recipients. The awards are presented at the place of the recipients' choosing--film festival, seminar, convention, or other suitable gathering. Application consists of no more than 500 words typewritten in single-spaced form including the nominee's name and the award for which s/he is nominated; listing of all the activities of the nominee particularly as they relate to the underwater or water-related subject; listing of all endeavors the nominee has arranged, founded, originated, or inspired; and listing of all other activities that may be of interest.

REQUIREMENTS: Nominations are accepted only from the membership of the Underwater Society or previous recipients of the NOGI award. Nominee need not be a member.
