Farmers' Markets
Why are farmers' markets important? They connect people to the source of their food, which is not just land it is grown on, but the people who grow it. Food at farmers' markets comes from the local area or the geographic region, not from far parts of the country or world, so energy used in bringing the food to you is much reduced. Because it has traveled a short distance and been handled by one farm or family, it is likely to be much fresher. And, farmers' markets are fun!
If there is a farmers' market in your town during the school day, it can be a great field trip destination, with students learning about agriculture careers, unprocessed and organic food, water use issues in their area, healthy school lunches and other meals, recipes for fresh food, and most importantly, the people and families that support our food system. If the farmers' market is not during the school day, it can make a great field trip for families and youth organizations.
Many students, particularly those not fortunate enough to have their own garden, are completely unaware of the relationship between what comes out of their refrigerator or cupboard, or off their plate, and the plants and animals which sustain us. Farmers' markets are one way we can reconnect students and their families to the healthy ecosystems and communities that are required to bring us fresh, healthy food.
