NNREC is a member of the No Child Left Inside (NCLI) Coalition.
The NCLI effort coalesced around the book Last Child in the Woods by Richard Louv. The best resources are the No Child Left Inside web site hosted by the Cheasapeake Bay Foundation along with many partners, and the Children and Nature Network.
No Child Left Inside Act of 2007
And now, the No Child Left Inside Act of 2007, which has been introduced in the US House of Representatives by John Sarbanes of Maryland and the US Senate by Jack Reed of Rhode Island. The NCLI act will modify the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (nicknamed No Child Left Behind) to include environmental education.
Dean Heller, Congressman for Nevada's second district, sits on the House Education Committee which will first consider the bill, and we are encouraging Congressman Heller to co-sponsor the bill, along with all our other representatives. This legislation could bring as much as $100,000 to Nevada to build capacity in environmental literacy statewide, with some of that coming to NNREC to support our efforts. That is important!
Please educate yourself about the issue at the No Child Left Inside web site hosted by the Chesapeake Bay Foundation along with many partners, then contract your congressional representatives to encourage their support. You can find your representative's contact information at Congress.org by entering your zip code. You may view NNREC's letter to Congressman Heller. As with any communication to your representatives, your letters or calls are most effective if you keep a positive tone (we all know the downside of No Child Left Behind, but want to emphasize the positives of this NCLI legislation), and offer a personal story of the benefit of environmental education and literacy to your family, children, students, community, and the natural environment.
