EETAP3 Building State Capacity for EE
The Nevada Natural Resource Education Council (NNREC) has received a three-year grant from the North American Association for Environmental Education (NAAEE) to build capacity for environmental education (EE) in the state of Nevada. These funds from the US Environmental Protection Agency through the third Environmental Education and Training Program (EETAP3) will allow NNREC to take a leadership and coordination role for environmental education that was not possible before, as well as directly expanding capacity by offering professional development for teachers and educators ourselves and with partners.
In 2006, NNREC will:
- Develop a Nevada EE Training Plan that recognizes both existing efforts and model curriculum and professional development models that can greatly increase both the quantity and quality of training by involving all partners in providing training
- Create a paid Director position who will provide stability and leadership for both NNREC and the environmental education community
- Offer the Lamoille Institute for Educators (LIFE) professional development week-long summer workshop, and cooperate in the Great Basin Teachers Workshop (GBTW)
- Offer at least one PLT and PLT-Fire workshop
In 20072008, NNREC will:
- Work with partners to implement the Nevada EE Training Plan, including coordinated teacher in-service and pre-service programs
- Create a state EE Advisory Council with membership from all the major players in the environmental education community; Golden State Environmental Education Consortium will mentor NNREC in this project
- Identify model EE schools in the state and working with a few schools to increase their capacity to offer environmental education and to serve as a model to all schools; Idaho Environmental Education Association will mentor NNREC in this project
- Offer training and dissemination of the NAAEE-sponsored Guidelines for Excellence in Environmental Education
- Develop and update correlations to state academic standards for PLT and Project WET
- Continue offering summer professional development experiences for educators, with better integration and partnership
- Create an online database of Nevada EE resources, including providers and curriculum, in partnership with Public Lands Institute (additional funding will be required)
