Project Learning Tree (PLT) is an award-winning environmental education program designed for teachers and other educators, parents and community leaders working with youth from preschool through grade 12. NNREC offers both educator workshops, designed for all educators, and facilitator workshops for educators who want to assist in facilitating PLT workshops or to use PLT activities in other professional development programs.
Exploring Environmental Issues: Places We Live was released in August 2006. This secondary module connects students to the places they live so they will care about and influence the decisions being made about those places. Eight inquiry-based activities get students exploring their own neighborhoods, learning about their community’s development and appearance through time, and involved in local community action projects. With the addition of this secondary module, it makes sense to have a secondary level PLT workshop, so expect to see one this fall or spring.
The new (2006) PreK-8 Environmental Education Activity Guide has been released, and will be used in all future workshops. The guide now contains more information on reading strategies, technology connections, differentiated instruction, and assessment. As is true internationally, the way to get this new guide is to take a workshop, however, PLT is selling the new guide to past workshop graduates for $29.95. Workshops
PLT uses the forest as a "window" on the world to increase students' understanding of our environment; stimulate students' critical and creative thinking; develop students' ability to make informed decisions on environmental issues; and instill in students the commitment to take responsible action on behalf of the environment. In Nevada a major focus is on wildland fire education (wildfire, defensible space, and fire and vegetation management), to meet the current interest and concern about wildfire, but a lot of other topics are covered and the workshop is valuable both for those with a particular interest in fire, and those whose interest is in other areas.
Both educator workshops, for people who use the PLT activities with students, and facilitator workshops, for people who train other teachers and educators, are offered.
If you would like to schedule a workshop for your school, agency, organization or pre-service class, please email plt@nnrec.org, and we will contact you to arrange details. The cost of these specially tailored workshops is dependent upon the availability of one or more qualified facilitators in your geographic location, and will have to include travel expenses if a local facilitator is not available.
Sponsors
NNREC is the primary sponsor of the PLT workshops in Nevada, along with partners Nevada Division of Forestry, USDA Forest Service, Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, and others. The workshops are supported by grants from the Nevada Division of Forestry Conservation Education Program (USDA Forest Service funds), BLM/PLT PLT-Fire Initiative, North American Association for Environmental Education (NAAEE) Environmental Education Training Partnership (EETAP) Building State Capacity for EE, USDA Forest Service Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, and other sources, as well as participant registration fees.
