May 2006
Title: Project Citizen
- Date: May 6, Saturday
- Location: Reno
- Description: We the People: Project Citizen is a curricular program for middle grade students that promotes competent and responsible participation in local and state government. The program helps young people learn how to monitor and influence public policy. In the process, they develop support for democratic values and principles, tolerance, and feelings of political efficacy. Entire classes of students or members of youth organizations work cooperatively to identify a public policy problem in their community. They then research the problem, evaluate alternative solutions, develop their own solution in the form of a public policy, and create a political action plan to enlist local or state authorities to adopt their proposed policy. Participants develop a portfolio of their work and present their project in a hearing showcase before a panel of civic-minded community members. [Note: though this is not specifically an environmental education program, it is an outstanding approach to student-led projects that often address environmental topics.]

Develop understanding of a crucial tool for recording and asking questions of what you see, the field journal. Investigating Insects: Engage in the processes of scientific investigation through the fascinating lens of insects. Learn to classify invertebrates, discuss the benefits of complete and incomplete metamorphosis, compare insect reproductive and survival strategies, and understand that science is a human endeavor that has a history and a future. Observe, collect data, analyze findings, formulate and revise hypotheses, and develop conclusions based on reasoning from evidence. Examining Mammals: Discover the identities of five mystery mammals by studying their skulls, teeth, fur, feet, tracks, and scat. Examine the component parts of each animal, make close observations, collect and analyze data, formulate hypotheses, and by reasoning from the evidence, come to conclusions about the identities of the five mammals. Learn significant mammal-related content and at the same time become more aware of the inquiry processes practiced to learn it. Digging Archaeology: Engage in a simulated dig based on an actual archaeological site. Examine artifacts and features found on the surface level and then "excavate" the site to discover what was there 100 years ago. Make close observations of the available evidence, construct maps, collect and analyze data, formulate hypotheses, and arrive at conclusions based on the data.
