This glossary primarily expands abbreviations and acronyms used on the NNREC website, as well as defining some terms related to environmental education and natural resource education, linked where appropriate to Wikipedia. At some locations where these abbreviations, acronyms, and terms are used, a link with the same styling as NNREC in the preceding sentence will bring you to this glossary page.

- EFS: Education for Sustainability is learning that links knowledge, inquiry, and action to help students build a healthy future for their communities and the planet. This term is becoming more common, especially within higher education, and sometimes used as a replacement for environmental education.

- PBE: place-based education: teaching about the human and built environments, which uses history, folk culture, social problems, economics, and the asthetics of the community and its environment to look at how landscape, community infrastructure, watersheds and cultural traditions all interact with each other. - PBSL: place-based service-learning: Place-based service-learning (PBSL) is a teaching and learning method that uses the local community and natural environment as a context for learning. Students identify community issues and priorities, then create and implement solutions through service-learning projects which enhance the community or natural environment. Students and their schools engage with local community members and resources to meet the mutual goals of increased academic performance and civic engagement, developing and practicing the skills and knowledge necessary to become active participants in their community and society. PBSL emphasizes integration rather than separation of subject areas, leading to efficient use of school time and attainment of comprehensive literacy goals. Collaborative teaching promotes student learning while increasing motivation and fulfillment for both students and teachers. - reflection: A thoughtful, serious looking back at one's experiences, individually or as a group. Reflection can become part of future planning.

- service-learning: A learning stretegy that combines academic and social education goals to meet real community needs (priorities) and requires application of knowledge, skills, and systematic reflection about the experience.
