2006

Dave Sanger, Environmental Educator: NNREC is pleased to honor Dave Sanger with the 2006 Environmental Educator Award. Though Dave now has job responsibilities that keep him from doing direct environmental education, he was one of the key people in developing the field of EE in Nevada, and also one of the founders of NNREC, so it seems appropriate in our 20th year to recognize Dave for his long service to EE.

High Sierra Resource Workshop, Environmental Education Program: HSRW has operated for 15 years, making it one of the longest and most successful programs in the state. Each summer a group of high school students interested in the outdoors and natural resource careers spends time learning about resource management issues and then enters the wilderness to apply their learning, appreciate the beauty, and enjoy making new friends.

Sue Jacox, PLT Educator : A lifetime Nevada educator, Sue was a founding board member of the Nevada Natural Resource Education Council and of Great Basin Outdoor School. She helped direct the Nevada Outdoor Education Workshop for teachers for ten consecutive years, facilitated Project Learning Tree and Project WILD workshops, and taught the High Sierra Resource Education Workshop for high school students and outdoor education for elementary students. After retiring from teaching at Reno High School and volunteering two years as an AmeriCorps*VISTA for Great Basin Outdoor School, she remains an active board member of Great Basin Outdoor School dedicated to "hands-on discovery in the outdoor classroom". Borrowing words from Richard Louv, she believes in "healing the broken bonds between our young and nature... because our mental, physical, and spiritual health depend upon it."

Mark Kimbrough, Service to the Board of Directors: Mark has served on the NNREC Board of Directors and Northern Chapter board almost every year since our founding. He facilitated a number of workshop for teachers and High Sierra Resource Workshop. Mark is curently the Executive Director of the Tahoe Rim Trail Association and a long term supporter of the trail. He was Regional Manager and Park Supervisor for Nevada State Parks in many locations include Tahoe Nevada State Park, and before that a Park Supervisor and seasonal with Washoe County Parks.
